Dr. Michel Chiasson named 2024 Excellence in Teaching Award winner
Maritime Resident Doctors’ recently presented its Excellence in Teaching Award for 2024 to Dr. Michel Chiasson. A family physician based in Cheticamp, NS, Dr. Chiasson works with residents at the Cape Breton Family Medicine Site.
“Dr. Chiasson is what I envision to be a true rural family physician,” his nomination reads. “From clinic, emergency medicine, and long-term care; his passion and enthusiasm shines with his love for medicine and caring for his community as a whole.”
This award is presented annually to a staff physician who makes an outstanding contribution to resident learning. Nominations are submitted by residents and the winner was selected by a Mardocs committee of residents.

- Ability to relate to and appreciate patient needs and concerns
- Patient communication and education
- Quality of bedside teaching
- The ability to teach at different levels
- Effective communication with residents and colleagues
- The ability to act as a role model
- Interest in residents’ personal development and well being

His teaching style is engaging and comprehensive, ensuring that I not only understand medical concepts but also appreciate the human side of healthcare.

In recognition of this award, a donation has been made to the Cape Breton West Volleyball Association on behalf of Dr. Chiasson.
